Cross stitch fabric calculator
Enter the design size in stitches from your chart and pick your fabric. You get the finished size and the piece of fabric to cut, margin included.
How it works
Design size in inches = stitches ÷ stitches per inch. On 14-count Aida, 140 stitches is 10 inches. Stitching over 2 threads halves the count, so 28-count evenweave over 2 is the same size as 14-count Aida. Then add your margin to every side: a 10 × 7.1 inch design with 3 inch margins needs about 16 × 13.1 inches of fabric.
Questions people ask
What does fabric count mean?
The count is how many stitches fit in one inch. 14-count Aida gives 14 stitches per inch, so a design 140 stitches wide is 10 inches wide.
What does stitching over two mean?
On evenweave or linen you usually stitch over 2 threads, so 28-count fabric gives 14 stitches per inch. Choose an "over 2" option and the calculator halves the count.
How much margin should I leave?
Many stitchers leave 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) on each side for hooping and framing. Type your own margin; the fabric size includes it on all four sides.
